The old lead and crock pot debacle

Recently on the board, one of the mommas posted an article about lead being contained in the glaze used to paint crock pots. This along with heavy ceramic/stoneware dishes, etc. So now, instead of just having to worry about lead being contained in our children’s toys, apparently we also need to worry about the items that hold our food.

It seems that evil lead is attacking us wherever we go.  Old houses usually have lead in the paint (or under layers of paint as it may be), unsuspecting dishes, grandma’s antique stoneware, toys, crock pots and who knows what else.  Now, some of the things I mentioned (i.e. lead in paint of old houses, grandma’s antique stoneware, etc.) are almost unavoidable.  If you buy an old house or receive old heirlooms, you are going to get all of the old, undesirable things that *might* come with it.

Though I must say that with this recent report, I am appalled that we as consumers are not taking more actions to protect ourselves (myself included).  As of late I have come to have the mindset that if things are made in third world countries, then chances are the wages aren’t the only thing the big bad corporation is skimping out on.  It makes me second guess EVERYTHING I buy for my family (from automobiles to bed sheets) and that is sad.

Just one more reason WHY I wish we manufactured more products in this country.  It seems that we have strictly become a consumerist nation with almost nothing else to fall on.  As you can see, it is hurting us in more ways than one.

Crap! I have 3 (yes, three) old crockpots and never would even think about lead. Now I will be wondering…Do they or don’t they? Thanks for the heads up.

I couldn’t agree with you more Kellie. Of course I’m sure you already knew that. ;)

I sure didn’t know that.It seems every month there’s something else we have to worry about. It does make me wonder though how people in the past managed to be healthier than most people in our Generation seem to be.

I had no idea about the crock pots…that’s not good! And your right, it seems like every time we turn around there is something else that contains lead. I’ve decided to try to buy handmade toys whenever possible…I wonder if there’s handmade crockpots out there!? lol!!

Do you know about a wooden crock with a glaze coating? We found this at an antique shop. It has a 2 on the side, if this means anything. It appears that the paint around the top edges are worn off.
Just concerned about lead in the glaze. We were going to use this to make pickles. Is there a way to test for this?

Concerned Moms last blog post..Exciting stuff!

CAUTION: I would not use a crock to make pickles unless I was sure it contains no lead or other toxic metal that could leach, because pickles are acidic and must stay a long time in the crock. Pickles are the worst case scenario for leaching lead from glaze if it is present there.

Why do manufacturers insist of putting such potent poisons in our cookware when safe, practical alternatives are available?

Grrr!

I really like the look of your template. Did it cost a lot to buy or did you build it yourself?
