The great crib climb

Well, I knew it would happen eventually.  I have envisioned this day for a long time.  That’s right… my baby did it.  He climbed out of his crib.  Somehow I knew that my last child would master the art of the crib climb.  The other two did not.  They were content with the comfort and security that their crib had to offer.  In fact, moving them from the crib to the bed was somewhat traumatic.  But here he is… my little guy… climbing effortlessly (or seemingly so) out of his crib.

Now what?

He is merely 21 months old.  As ready as he may be, I surely am not.

I have read comments ranging from “don’t react to it and move about as planned” to “It’s time for him to have a bed so that he can avoid falling”.

I think we’re going to make the transition slowly.  I have never bought a toddler bed.  I have always found them to be kind of useless.  However, I think I may bite the bullet this time and get him a toddler bed.  The climb into bed will be that much easier for him and the bed itself has built in bed-rails.  I will also prep the doors by having a baby gate put up in front of the bedroom door or a child-proof doorknob cover so that he can’t move around the house during the night (I would be afraid that he would fall down the stairs in an attempt to try and find Dave and I).

At what age did your little one start climbing out of the crib (if ever)?  What did you do about it?
